Cuisine Crush Venezia! Delicate Dishes at Caffè Florian Piazza San Marco

Situated in the Procuratie Nuove of Piazza San Marco, Venezia, established in December 1720, CAFFÈ FLORIAN is the oldest coffee house in Italy. Opened with simply two furnished rooms as Alla Venezia Trionfante (Venice the Triumphant), later named after its owner Floriano Francesconi, Caffè Florian was patronised by notable artists, inclusive of the playwright Goethe, poet Lord Byron, novelist Marcel Proust and Charles Dickens. 

 

After the expansion in 1750, the café was completely restored by Lodovico Cadorin in 1858. Sala degli Uomini Illustri was decorated by Giulio Carlini with paintings from Marco Polo, Pietro Orseolo to Titian; Sala del Senato was decorated by Giacomo Casa with the paintings The Age of Enlightenment, or Progress,Civilization educating the nations. Casa as well inserted masonic symbols in the painting, allusion to Venice’s close connections with certain secret societies and illuminism. 

In the 19th century, the Florian played an important role in the Italian Risorgimento, Senate Hall was the meeting point for a group of Venetian patriots, hosted the wounded civilians, becoming a temporary hospital.

 

As being a revisited client, my favourite dish to order and enjoy during the breaks of La Biennale di Venezia, is Club Sandwich Florian, with baked toast bread filled with smoked beef, asparagus cream, tomato, cheese, arugula, and always accompany Florian blend espresso coffee. 

Yet another I highly enjoy at Caffè Florian, is the visitor watching with classic live music to play on. Thought at the peak season there will be 6 EUR additional charge of the concert, jot down my notes after the movies watching and stay at the marble table as long as I prefer, still the very worthwhile to amuse at the hectic schedule of Venice Film Festival.
