Helsinki 2014 May Day Design Market: Diana Park

May 17, 2014 from 12:00-14:00

Helsinki residences love to visit outdoor market on shining days. Perfectly, 17th of May the temperature goes up to 23, a convenient and lovely way to spend the day under the sun.

Erottajankatu 7, as known as Diana Park, is full of white balloons with ‘Design District’ around the pure white tents. I visit IVANAhelsinki, miun, titiMadam and Lokal, enjoy the Nordic patterns of kitchenware and deco fabric, and try to flip those cute mini books at Napa. Due to the outdoor market environment, there are only 2 fitting tents, and exhibit tables are a few dresses in comparison of Fashion Stock Sales. So I focus on home grocery, and pick IVANAhelsinki Maatuska-mummo (Russian Dolls) cooler bag, beach towel, drawstring bag and the last, a Tent cotton towel as my early summer trophy.
With the DJ’s music spinning, children and doggies back and forth running, may flowers in the wind swinging, it’s a delightful experience to shop around at the inspiring atmosphere. After Vappu (May Day), Helsinki will host more of garden party or flash sale onto fashion and design, fun events follow summer's steps!

Magazine Madness: Harper’s Bazaar Kirsten Dunst in UK May 2014

Harper’s Bazaar UK May 2014

On the way to take spring holiday, my eyes are hovering around the magazine racks. On the train, my gazes already engage with Kirsten Dunst and spring flowers blooming every page turn on Harper’s Bazaar UK, May 2014 issue.

From the cover, the right-angle triangle composition portraits Kirsten Dunst’s relaxed and romantic attitude, surrounded by full spring blossom. The colours of cover are in dark pink, ivory white, lime green and light fuchsia hues. Dunst, with bright blond curly hair, wears a baby blue Miu Miu dress, right hand cups her cheek, bare left arm centers on the 1/4 of cover, and her eyes looks at the lens slightly downward, fresh and lovely. The whole cover reveals a touch of Romantic School art composition, which also conveys the coherent theme to its interesting editorial works of this issue.

Under the catch of David Slijper, by using soft focus technique, the flowery garden background does not distract Burberry Prorsum silk crepe or Miu Miu silk and wool mix coat. Styling by former Lula Editor-in-Chief Leith Clark (Violet magazine has launched this year), Dunst’s smiles toward the right side, while the light comes from the back. Meanwhile, the background on white dahlia with green leaves, perfectly contrasts with Dunst’s wearing Mary Katrantzou silk, polyester and cotton suit, carefully sewn beaded white rhinestone and lime petals. Dunst also talks about growing up in a household of strong females, acting together with Viggo Mortensen and the setback time of her acting career.

Aside from the cover girl campaign pages, I especially like how Harper’s Bazaar uses individual photoshop editorial work to divide the thematic pages (Style, Accessories, Couture, Talking Points, Bazaar, Beauty); each individual page is echoing the cover topic: flora. This logically consistence makes May 2014 issue more like a fashion book rather than a commercial magazine. At the crucial moment of paper magazine’s survival, the heaviness of the paper, the image of the cover face, the high quality of photography, the wisely written contents, the well chosen of presents, the careful planned of the themes are more essentials than pleasing the advisors. Well done, team Harper’s Bazaar, you surely makes my train trip a more pleasant journey.

Helsinki Late Night Shopping Event #IVANAhelsinki May 2014

15 May, 2014, 18:00-19:00

Ihana Helsinki! Being part of the Lovely Helsinki City Festival (kaupunkifestivaali ydinkeskustassa), the second time of Late Night Shopping Event finally rewards with a beautiful day. The boutiques and galleries of Design District in Helsinki central are open longer hours during the event. Erottajankatu, Annakatu, Fredrikinkatu, Uudenmaankatu and Iso Roobertinkau compose this creative but not hectic area.

At the store hall, with lemon yellow and light brown deco, IVANAhelsinki serves lime juices and sweet popcorn as a welcome treat; at the basement, the floral dresses, the printed purses, the ViTALis ointment, the pinky fire alarms present the warm atmosphere. That’s one of the reasons I would try not to miss every Late Night Shopping Event at IVANAhelsinki, not only just for the free snacks or friendly friends, but also those various decorations always reflect the creative minds of Finnish design.
Slightly unfortunate, is that May Late Night Shopping Event lacks of new musician to live up the store. Nevertheless, since IVANAhelsinki recently regains quite some of their previous season patterns on grocery items, my favourite top 3----Ruova (Missy), Maatuska-mummo (Russian Dolls) and Where the Fuck is My Sailor----are back to the stock!

Fashion Fun! 2000 POP Earrings & LIUJO Fur Scarf

May is the start-up fashion season of Helsinki, yet the unpredictable windy days prohibit the choices of fun garments to shout out. That’s how important and functional accessories can break through those limited choices more options.

This LIUJO raspberry rabbit fur scarf catches my immediate concern while hidden beneath a huge pile of gloves, beanies and socks at fashionstore outlet cleanse sale wagon. Made in Italy, soft-touch, warm-feel and lovely-hue specialties make it a perfect spring accessory. At the bottom corner of scarf attaches a round metal tag, concave carved with black bold LIUJO typo along with a shining rhinestone. I adore the detailed design, even it appears quite invisible, I never mind. Style of day I am wearing POP 2000 earrings, LLU JO fur scarf, Vanessa Bruno cotton cardigan, Brandmair modal shirt, Gina Tricot jeans and carry See by Chloé calf skin sac.
My concern on PETA’s controversial propaganda is marginalized, plus on the issue of natural decomposition, it’s more anti eco-friendly at the use of artificial materials on outwear and accessories. ‘Made in Italy’ eliminates certain concerns on mistreatment toward fluffy rabbits (I would not purchase fur product which is Made in China). Secondly, very unfortunately, due to those polyester, nylon and acrylic apparels electrify me numerous times in Finland, I refuse to sentence myself to receive the uncomfortable charge again, and accessories is no doubt inclusive.

What teams up with LIUJO fur scarf on windy spring look is this 2000’s POP earring set. Made in Japan, with surgical posts, metal floral pedal decoration wrapping these 4 different purple-poppy colours up; I usually mix and match them with each other as I wish. On the earring set holder, printed silver-foil ‘Our pleasure to present dream for you’! (Earring holder is usually a significant identification for the production of the earrings, since night market ones would care less). I name these pairs as ‘2000’s POP’ since I did purchase them in year 2000, and surprisingly regain them from my desktop table drawer during this spring cleaning. Indeed, fine accessories accede, occupy, and are always worthwhile to keep in mine.

Helsinki Fashion Stock Sales SS 2014

May 9th-10th,2014

Early May Day in Helsinki is still rainy and windy, but it can’t stop fashion fetishists to dig in Vanha Ylioppilastalo (Old University building) at Mannerheimintie 3. Second time joining, this year I visit not only for newbie discovery, but also for friends meeting and cheering.

Perhaps of the limitation of space, boutique shop Nina’s situates at the slightly chilly hallway. After welcome drinks at Boinade, I walk in and chat with designer at 2OR+BYYAT, staff of IVANAhelsinki, try EMMI shoes at Acolyth, silk lingerie at Tyra Therman, Missoni scarf at NÓMAD, and say hello to the Director of Marita Huurinainen. I am always fond of elegant and special jewelry, and this time I find the hand piece, made with pearls and copper at pulu, extremely fresh and beautiful. Unfortunately, ‘fashion minds think alike’, this lovely hand piece has been booked by 18:00. Blond and sweet designer of pulu, Marjo Haikonen, warmly says that she could customize this jewelry for me via the communication of email. Oh, yes, perhaps I should start to write her just now!
Arranged and sponsored by ELLE, Lumi and napakka, the big difference of Fashion Stock Sales this year than last is that the DJ music lives up the whole building, with the increasing designers’ attendance and lower prices on unique fashion goods. What lack the most is the short numbers of the fitting tents; I nearly have to wait for 10 minutes to try 4 pieces of lingerie on. Still, harvest is abundant this year: a colourful silk underwear at TyraTherman, a black cotton, made in Finland skirt from Camilla Mikama, and a pair of Carven suede high heels from Nina’s. I Definitely will show them off on up-coming blog posts.
