Toompea Loss / Tallinn Castle was referred to as the Castle of the Danes, since the castle was taken over by Danish crusaders led by king Valdemar II from 1219. As well officially in Latin Castrum Danorum and in contemporary archaic Estonian Taani Linna, the castle was under reconstruction by the Order of the Brethren of the Sword in 1227, while Castrum Danorum again fell to Denmark 10 years later, was sold to the Teutonic Order in 1346 and remained until the end of the Middle Ages.
As the crusading Teutonic Order was a religious group, Toompea Loss came to resemble a large scale of monastery, which included a chapel, a chapter house and a dormitory for the knights. The order was also responsible for erecting the still visible towers of the castle, including Pilsticker (Arrow-sharpener), Stür den Kerl (Ward off the Enemy), Landskrone (Crown of the Land) and the 48 metres height Langer Hermann dominates the castle skyline.
Toompea Loss now houses the Parliament of Estonia. The national flag of Estonia is hoisted daily at the top of the Langer Hermann tower at sunrise, to the sound of the national anthem, and lowered at sunset.
