Helsinki 2014 Recycling Factory Eco Event

Helsinki 26-27 April, 10AM-5PM

At highly conscious on ecological and recycling environment, Finland has practiced it the best. There are flea markets (Finnish called kirpputori) in every community, and vintage fashion is hot among all generation in Helsinki. Perhaps it is one of the reasons that Paris Haute Couture brand could never ever successfully invade Finland, or we can say that creative and confident folks don’t need to follow the Hollywood celebrity’s trends, since style shouldn’t be defined by those who merely appearing on the TV screens.

Recycling Factory Event, Kierrätystehdas in Finnish, held at Kappeli in Ruoholahti, Helsinki. Free admission, there are mainly 5 areas in-and-out: At outdoor, organic food stalls, recycling cabins and DIY bike fixing tent attract the visitors; Indoors of Kappeli, Blogger flea market, organic skin cares, vintage shops plus recycled design, and give ‘n’ take area make us intrigued. What shocks me the most is the give ‘n’ take area: after someone ‘dumped’ their unwanted on the clothes racks or on the large table, parents with children, elder ladies, student buddies or various ethnics immediately fulfill their empty bags as swelling as they can. I took 5 clothes hangers as my freebies fulfillment of the day.

My favourite section is ‘vintage shops plus recycled design’ due to my recent interest on vintage goodies. For vintage fashion, I am still studying its history and fabric, and for the hygiene concerns, I didn’t purchase any garment so far. But for the earrings, as long as I find eye-catching design without fake suspicious, usually I can get pretty good bargain. For vintage earrings, the heaviness and the clean condition are what I value the most, the best is the pair attached with its holder with brand name on it. For sure there are loads of faux rhinestones or pearls at the market, but the heaviness can at least show the metal works rather the plastic materials. Some vintage earrings have stained with unknown human debris, which shows the carelessness of the sellers, if the unknown cells seem impossibly to cleanse off, this pair is definitely out. Luckily I found this futuristic jellyfish clip clasp earrings, 15e at vintage fashion stall from Turku.

For my Made in Finland favour, ‘homemade in Finland’ area provides shoppers a great opportunities on choosing home deco items. Pisama design exhibit this handmade cotton linen with dozens of rouge high heels, which in between, inserting the city names of Finland, 12e, a great pick to make my cosmetic desk a bit different hue for up-coming summer season.

At the event, the zero waste fashion show, book crossing stalls and India massage serve yet another experience. Any shopper, organic lover or DIY fan can easily find their new surprises to know the products’ origin and the way to maintain them. Recycling Factory Eco Event is more a powerful manifesto than any political advocacy to educate people about our earth, our creativeness and our thankfulness.

Spend wisely. Waste less and cherish more.
